Have your favorite pair of jeans developed wrinkles? As with most garments, it’s not uncommon for jeans to develop wrinkles. Wearing a pair of jeans for an extended period, for example, can cause the denim fabric to crease, thereby leading to the formation of wrinkles. When this occurs, your jeans will look messy and unkempt. The good news is that you can de-wrinkle your jeans using one of the following methods.
#1) Toss Them in the Dryer
Running your jeans in the dryer for about 10 to 15 minutes should smooth out most if not all of the wrinkles. As they bounce around in the dryer, your jeans will smooth out. It’s a safe and effective way to de-wrinkle jeans that won’t damage or otherwise harm your jeans. Just remember to set your dryer to the low heat setting. If your jeans are exposed to too much heat, they may shrink and/or fade.
#2) Hang Them on a Clothes Hanger
Hanging your jeans on a clothes hanger can help to eliminate wrinkles. When you remove your jeans from the dryer, place them on a clothes hanger, after which you can hang them in your closet or elsewhere. By hanging your jeans on a clothes hanger, gravity will naturally smooth out any wrinkles in them. With that said, it’s recommended that you use a heavy-duty wooden clothes hanger — as opposed to a cheap plastic clothes hanger — for maximum benefit. Cheap clothes hangers tend to buckle under the weight of heavy garments, meaning it could break with your jeans on it.
#3) Use an Iron
Of course, you can always de-wrinkle your jeans using an iron. Irons use a combination of both water and heat to remove wrinkles from garments. To iron a pair of jeans, you’ll need to lay them flat on an ironing board — don’t use any other surface, as the iron may damage it — at which point you can gently rub the iron back and forth across the wrinkles. In just five or so minutes, this should eliminate most if not all of the wrinkles.
Ironing is arguably one of the most effective ways to de-wrinkle jeans. Be warned, though, if you leave the iron sitting in any single spot for an extended period, it may damage that area of your jeans. The heat from the iron can create scorch marks that are difficult to treat. To prevent this from happening, use a low-heat setting while constantly moving the iron around at all times.
#4) Use a Garment Steamer
Alternatively, you can use a garment steamer to de-wrinkle your jeans. Like irons, garment steamers create steam by combining heat and water, which is then able to smooth out creases and wrinkles. Garment steamers are slightly different, however, because they don’t physically touch garments. To use a garment steamer, you hold it several inches away from your jeans. When turned on, the garment steamer will blast steam outwards and towards your jeans. Assuming your jeans just have a few minor wrinkles, a garment steamer should smooth them out. And because they don’t actually touch garments, there’s no risk of accidentally scorching or singing your jeans.
#5) Spray Bottle and Hair Dryer
A lesser-known way to de-wrinkle your jeans involves using a spray bottle filled with water and a traditional hair dryer. How does this work exactly? To smooth out wrinkles, spray your jeans with a light mist of water. Next, hold the hair dryer a few inches away from your jeans while blasting it with hot air. Like steamers and irons, a hair dryer — combined with water, of course — will smooth out the wrinkles.
#7) Steam Them in Your Bathroom
Another trick that’s highly effective at de-wrinkling jeans involves streaming in the bathroom. Not everyone has access to an iron, steamer or hair dryer. If you don’t have any of these items, you can de-wrinkle your jeans by hanging them in the bathroom with the shower running.
The idea behind is this trick is that it exposes your jeans to steam produced by the shower. With the hot water running, your shower will produce steam that fills the bathroom. If you hang up your jeans in the bathroom — you can do using the shower curtain rod — they’ll be exposed to this steam, which should smooth out the wrinkles. Keep in mind, however, that it may take up to 20 minutes to remove all the wrinkles. If you’re not willing to wait this long, you should use a different method to de-wrinkle your jeans.
#8) Use a Wrinkle-Release Product
You might be surprised to learn that there are products available for de-wrinkling garments. Known as wrinkle-release products (for obvious reasons), they offer a quick and easy way to smooth out wrinkles. Wrinkle-release products contain a blend of chemicals that, when sprayed onto jeans, releases any creases and wrinkles.
To use a wrinkle-release product, lay your jeans flay on any surface, at which point you can spray them with the product. After allowing them to sit for a few minutes, the wrinkles should be gone (or reduced at least).
#9) Choose 100% Denim Jeans
Finally, consider choosing jeans made of 100% denim. Some people assume all jeans are made entirely of denim, but this isn’t necessarily true. You’ll often find them made with other fabrics as well, and some of these fabrics are prone to wrinkling. By choosing jeans made of 100% denim, you can rest assured knowing that they won’t easily wrinkle. If they do happen to wrinkle, just use one of the methods listed here to smooth them back out.
Don’t let a few wrinkles stop you from wearing your favorite pair of jeans. Whether they are skinny, straight-leg, low-rise, high-rise, boot-cut or any other style, you can smooth them by using one of the de-wrinkling methods listed here.
