With hundreds of dozens of different styles available, choosing a pair of men’s dress pants can be a challenge (to say the least). You have to consider the size, color, fabric/material, and whether they are pleated or non-pleated. The vast array of choices available can make it difficult for many men to find the perfect pair of dress pants. If this sounds like a familiar scenario, keep reading for some helpful tips and tricks on how to choose the right dress pants.
Measurement
Men’s dress pants actually have three different measurements, all of which are important in determining their fit. The waist size is the measurement around the pant’s waist. You can find out your waist size by placing a measuring tape around your waist, wrapping it completely around your body so it creates a full circle. The inseam, on the other hand, is the measurement from the crotch to the bottom of the leg. A third measurement used in men’s dress pants is the inner leg seam, which is the measurement from the inner leg seams (hence the name) to the bottom of the leg.
Material
Pay close attention to the material when choosing a pair of dress pants. With summer officially here, certain fabrics — particularly “thicker” ones — may prove to be uncomfortable when worn for long periods at a time. Linen and cotton, however, are excellent alternatives, as they are ultra-lightweight, comfortable and stylish. Whether you’re going to a business meeting, wedding, job interview or any other formal event, you can’t go wrong with a pair of linen or cotton dress pants.
Pleated or Non-Pleated
Now for the age-old question: should I wear pleated or non-pleated dress pants? If you have larger thighs, pleated pants may help to create a more balanced look. For everyone else, thought, non-pleated pants are generally the preferred choice. Of course, you are free to wear whichever style of pants you desire, but most men prefer non-pleated for formal occasions.
Check for Lining
Many dress pants are produced with lining for added comfort. Aside from the comfort, however, lining also offers a second benefit: it helps to retain the original shape of the pants. This can prove particularly useful for guys who are always battling wrinkled pants. Lined dress pants aren’t necessarily wrinkle-free, but they are less prone to wrinkles than other pants.
